Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange has asked the state Alcoholic Beverage  Control board to reject VictoryLand casino's application for a liquor license.  Strange made the request in a letter Friday.  The AG said VictoryLand has a long history of violating state laws on illegal gambling.  VictoryLand owner Milton McGregor said last week that he plans to reopen the casino in Shorter before the end of the month. 

Officer Recovering

Authorities say an east Alabama police officer who was shot after a triple killing and a two-county chase is improving.  The Heflin Police Department says officer Jackie Stovall was removed from a breathing machine on Sunday and is stable.  Cleburne County Sheriff Joe Jacks says authorities are still trying to verify the identities of three people shot to death Saturday in a mobile home in eastern Alabama.  Jacks says the man believed responsible for the slayings led officers on a chase that left Stovall severely wounded and the suspect dead about 25 miles away. 

Family Murdered

Police in Homewood, a suburb in Birmingham, continue to investigate a triple slaying involving a mother and her two young sons.  Homewood Police said in a new release that they received a call about noon Friday from a man who said he had returned home from work and found his wife and their two young sons, ages four and five at their apartment.  Homewood police said the man is being held in protective custody. 

Kennedy Remembered

Representative Yvonne Kennedy was remembered as a dedicated educator, activist and leader.  Kennedy died December 8th at age 67.  A rousing funeral was held for her Saturday at the Mobile Convention Center.  The funeral was attended by Mobile Mayor Sam Jones and Governor Robert Bentley.  The Medal of Valor was bestowed upon Kennedy at the end of the service. 

ASU Online

About eight years ago, Alabama State University began adding an online instructional component to its curriculum.  Dr. Kenley Obas, associate vice-president for academic computing, says the offerings have expanded from the doctorate in transitional physical therapy program to three additional programs and multiple courses.  ASU now also has 50 undergraduate and 30 graduate courses available online.
