Alabama State University's new president has been placed on administrative leave with pay.  ASU Trustees went into executive session Monday and recommended Dr, Joseph Silver be placed on leave immediately.  Dr. John Knight, the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the university, will oversee daily operations.  Ken Mullinex, a university spokesman said the full trustee board will meet Thursday to consider the recommendation. 

Physical Education

Alabama is changing the way it assesses students in physical education classes in public schools.  The state Department of Education says every Alabama student enrolled in physical education classes in grades 2-12 will participate in the new Alabama Physical Fitness Assessment.  It replaces the President's Challenge Fitness Test, which was adopted nearly 30 years ago.  The new assessment focuses on health-related fitness. 

Gambling Machines

A circuit judge in Birmingham has ruled that the state's Attorney General's office can destroy the 100 gambling machines seized in the state's first casino raid in March 2009.  The judge ruled Monday after four gaming companies say they no longer wanted the machines because they are outdated.  More than $550,000 dollars also was seized in the raid at White Hall Entertainment Center in Lowndes County.
