Montgomery's police department is investigating the city's 28th homicide and has arrested a suspect in its 29th. 26-year-old Oterious Belser was struck by a vehicle on November 18th. He died from his injuries at University Hospital in Birmingham on November 21st. Authorities says their initial investigation indicates Belser was intentionally struck. MPD detectives are pursuing active leads.
A 21-year old man has been arrested in connection with Montgomery's 29th homicide. Zachary Stirelwalt is in the Montgomery County Detention Facility under a $75,000 dollar bond. He is charged with one count of murder in the shooting death of 43-year-old Daniel Turman. According to MPD, the victim offered Stirewalt temporary housing after he recently left his home in North Carolina and had no place to live.
Traffic accidents over the long Thanksgiving holiday travel period claimed the lives of six people. The Alabama Department of Public Safety said the six fatalities occurred in Baldwin, Chilton, Conecuh, Etowah, Limestone and Mobile counties. The holiday travel period ran from Wednesday evening through midnight Sunday.
Through December 20th the Alabama Emergency Management is giving away All Hazards Weather Alert Radios to lucky participants of an online contest. Agency spokesperson Yasamie August says the idea is to keep severe weather awareness on the minds of state residents. People are asked to go to the State's Emergency Management Agency Facebook page and answer the weather-related question correctly for a change to be selected as the winner of the free weather radio. Participants must live in Alabama to be eligible.
