Alabama's schools superintendent says a state investigation into grade-changing allegations at Montgomery Public schools has turned up "significant findings." Superintendent of Education Tommy Bice said he has been provided with a large number of documents related to the findings, which he called "troubling." Bice said the findings are serious enough that he plans to spend part of the Thanksgiving holiday reviewing the documents.
ASU Stadium
We are just a day away from the opening of the new football stadium on the Alabama State University campus. Last night, hundreds of ASU students, alumni and supporters swarmed the downtown district for a block party, pep rally and pub crawl. ASU Band Director Dr. James Oliver said the Marching Hornets eagerly await their first performance in the new stadium.
Wire Fraud
Federal prosecutors say an Autauga County man pleaded guilty to a one-count felony indictment accusing him of wire fraud. The Department of Justice said in a statement Tuesday that 54-year -old Ricky Nelson Dawson of Autauga County is accused of the theft of about $6.2 million dollars in checks payable to the federal government. Dawson, according to prosecutors, carried out the thefts between March 2007 and May of this year while he served as director of the Camden and Bay Minette offices of the USDA's rural development programs.
Oldest Celebration
Birmingham has long claimed to have the nation's oldest celebration of Veterans Day. Now, the U.S. Senate agrees. The Senate has passed a resolution stating that Birmingham is home to the nation's first and longest running observance of Veterans Day. The resolution was sponsored by GOP Senator Jeff Sessions. An identical resolution has been introduced in the U.S. House by Representatives Terri Sewell and Spencer Bachus.
