April is Autism Awareness Month

Loveless Academic Magnet Program High School teacher Kate Wilson can now add "Jeopardy" contestant to her resume.  The AP language and composition teacher competed against 14 others in the Teachers Tournament in October.  Today, students and faculty watched the taping of the show to find out how well Wilson scoared.  A "Jeopardy" representative will vist LAMP Wednesday to present Wilson with a classroom version of the game. 

Funeral Services

Funeral services are being planned at Tuskegee University for retired Lieutenant Colonel Herbert E. Carter, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen.  The school says a funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at the campus chapel for Carter, who died November 8th at the age of 95.  Carter served in the Air Force and its Army predecessor for 25 years before retiring.  He also taught at Tuskegee.

Weather Awareness

Temperatures have already begun falling into the 30s on some nights, meaning winter is just around the corner.  In line with that, the National Weather Service office in Birmingham is observing Winter Weather Awareness Week all this week.  Chief meteorologist for the Service, Jim Stefkovich, says the primary consideration for the cold is being prepared for having no electricity.  He says a complete rundown of winter weather preparedness tips are available on their website at weather.gov.

Seeking Secession

Al.com reports that Alabama is one of 19 states where people have signed a petition seeking to withdraw from the United States and create its own government.  The movement to secede contains signatures from more than 3,700 Alabamians.  The petitions were created on the White House website called "We The People" program.
