Constitutional Challenge

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a constitutional challenge to a key part of the landmark Voting Rights Act.  The section being challenged requires all or parts of 16 states, including Alabama, with a history of discrimination in voting to get federal approval before making any changes in the way they hold elections.  Supporters of the law point to what they are recent and widespread attempts to restricting minority voting.  The case involves a challenge filed by the Shelby County Commission.

Toxicology Report

The Mobile County district attorney says she hopes to have a toxicology report by the end of the week on a University of South Alabama student from Wetumpka who was shot and killed by a campus police officer.  District Attorney Ashley Rich said she asked the state Department of Forensic Sciences to expedite the report.  She said the department had to send samples to an independent lab because the stat lab doesn't test for bath salts, synthetic marijuana or LSD.  18-year-old Gil Collar was shot and killed by a campus police officer on October 6th following a incident outside the campus police station.
