Federal prosecutors in Montgomery continue to target identity theft and tax fraud.

A postal service mail carrier has been indicted for his involvement with a stolen identity refund fraud conspiracy.  Vernon Harrison of Montgomery was charged with conspiring to file false claims, mail fraud, aggravated identify theft and embezzlement from the mail. 

In a separate case, a Montgomery woman will serve almost six years in federal prison and must pay more than $100,000 dollar in restitution for filing false tax returns.  The U.S. Department of Justice said Jacqueline Slaton pleaded guilty to filing false federal and state tax returns and requesting nearly $115,000 dollars between December 2011 and March 2012.

Tuskegee Rally

Dozens of people joined Tuskegee Mayor-elect Johnny Ford for a town rally and march yesterday in support of the Victoryland Casino complex which has been closed since 2010.  Ford and others have argued the gaming facility is needed to bolster Macon County's economy and reduce it's high unemployment rate. Mayor-elect Ford also said he has filed an ethics complaint against Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange. 

GFK Poll

A couple of numbers have changed but the latest Associated Press GFK Poll has the Presidential race at a virtual dead heat, with Republican Mitt Romney leading President Barack Obama 47 percent to 45 percent.  Alabama State University Political Science Professor, Dr. D'Linell Finley says he's not surprised.  Alabama elections officials say Friday is the last day to register to vote in the November 6th General Election.
