High Scores

Educators say Alabama tops all other states for the growth in high schools making qualifying scores on Advanced Placement exams for the last five years and for the growth in minority students taking AP courses.

State Schools Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice was elated about the results.  Bice joined Governor Robert Bentley for today's announcement at Stanhope Elmore High School in Millbrook.  Overall, qualifying scores from the A + College Ready program have gone up 102 percent and minority participation soared 318 percent over the last five years.

The organizers of Jubilee Cityfest are bringing down the curtain on the annual music festival in Montgomery.  After 36 years of drawing musical acts to the region, the event's board of directors has voted to retire the festival.  In a written statement, event chairman Dick Morris said their charter mission to created a vibrant and exciting downtown has been accomplished.

County Commission

The Montgomery County Commission adopted an operating budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year today.  The almost $95 million dollar spending plan is only slightly less than the current one.  Commission Chairman Elton Dean is pleased with several aspects of the new budget.  The county benefited this year from increased sales tax and lodging tax collections, according to Commissioner Dean.  The budget passed on a unanimous vote.
