Forecasters say Isaac is still spinning off-life threatening severe weather even as it weakens. The massive storm is slowly trekking north over Louisiana.
The National Hurricane Center says Isaac is still generating hazards from inland flooding, storm surge and potential tornadoes across the central Gulf coast.
Aldersgate UMC
Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Montgomery is open to Isaac storm evacuees. The American Red Cross has set up shelter there with the capacity to house up to one hundred people. Red Cross volunteers are providing displaced residents hot meals, snacks, blankets and comfort kits.
No Tax
Governor Robert Bentley says he won't propose any tax increases if Alabama voters reject a proposal to take more than $437 million dollars out of a state trust fund to use the state General Fund budget. Bentley told the Birmingham News that he made a promise to the people of Alabama that he wouldn't raise taxes on families and he intends to keep that promise.
Child Pornography
An Auburn man is headed to federal prison after he pleaded guilty for possessing child pornography. U.S. Attorney George Beck said in a statement today that 50-year-old Douglas Burl Breland was sentenced to serve five years. Breland plead guilty to the sex crimes in June 2012.
Officer Sentenced
A former Fort Deposit police officer will serve 36 months in federal prison for stealing money from drivers stopped on Interstate 65 in central Alabama. Federal prosecutors in Montgomery said U.S. District Judge Keith Watkins ordered the sentence Tuesday for 25-year-old Jessie Alan Fuller. U.S. Attorney George Beck said another former Fort Deposit police officer, Carlos Bennett of Greenville, will go on trial September 10th.
West Nile
Alabama Public Health officials say there are now 14 cases of the West Nile virus statewide. One person in Montgomery County is believed to have died from the illness. Federal health officials says WNV cases are up 40 percent since last week and may rival the record years of 2002 and 2003.
Jazz Concert
The seventh annual Jazz on the Grass, the river region's only Labor Day concert, will be held in a new location this year. The town of Pike Road's Rolling Hills neighborhood is the site for the all-day concert.
