The Food and Drug Administration says it has approved the new flu vaccine for the season beginning this year. 

This year's vaccine has one strain in common with last year's vaccine, plus two new viral strains.  According to the Centers for Disease Control between five and 20 percent of Americans get the flu each year.  The CDC recommends that everyone older than six months receive an annual flu vaccine.

Transportation Hotline

Transportation arrangements are a vital part of preparing for the new school year.  For the fourth consecutive year the Montgomery Public School System is offering its transportation hotline to answer any questions regarding bus routes or bus stops.  The hotline for transportation information is 223-6900.

Mosquito Protection

The Alabama Department of Public Health is urging the public to protect themselves from mosquito-borne illness.  Veterinarian Dr. Dee Jones says there have been four reported cases of the West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis in horses in Alabama this year. 

Court Ruling

A judge has ruled that the State Department of Education will remain in control of the Birmingham school system and Birmingham school Superintendent Craig Witherspoon will continue in his job.  Circuit Judge Houston Brown granted injunctions Monday against the Birmingham Board of Education.  The suits are part of the legal battle that has gone on since the stated department decided to take over the Birmingham schools on June 26th due to financial problems. 

Tribal Dispute

An Indian tribe in Oklahoma wants Alabama's Poarch Creek Indians to halt plans to build a 20-story hotel and casino on tribal land in Wetumpka.  The Muscogee Nation has historic ties to the land and is objecting to the graves of its ancestors being exhumed and moved to make way for the expansion by the Poarch Creeks.  The treasurer for the Poarch Creeks said that they have worked with the Muscogee tribe and the remains have been archived and reinterred.
