Alabama Waiver

Alabama Education officials say they will request a waiver from the U.S. Department of Education.  Educators want to establish their own standards to have all students performing at the proficient level in math and reading by 2014.  The state's plan calls for all high school students to be prepared to get a job or pass first-year courses in a university, community college or technical school without remediation.

Business Closed

Two major fires within a 12-month period has prompted Montgomery's Fire Marshal to shut down a business located near Washington Ferry Road.  The action was taken by Fire Marshal Harold Bellinger Thursday after Montgomery firefighters battled a blaze at the Southern Pallets Company on Holbrook Drive.  The fire erupted Thursday morning.  Bellinger said there were major fire code violations.  There were no injuries.  The company was the site of another fire in July 2011.

Prison Sentence

A Montgomery man is likely headed to prison for the rest of his life.  The Montgomery County District Attorney's office said 36-year-old Gerrard Dixon pleaded guilty to robbery and attempted murder in connection with the October 2011 robbery-shooting at the Road Runner Convenience store on Woodley Road.  Dixon admitted to a judge Wednesday that he shot a store clerk who has since recovered.
