City, county and school officials took shovel in hand this morning for the ceremonial groundbreaking of the city's first east side high school. Park Crossing High School is projected to open in the fall of 2013.
Teenager Sentenced
A Montgomery teenager accused of hindering prosecution in a triple homicide in Auburn last month has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in a separate killing in Montgomery. Circuit Judge Gene Reese imposed the maximum term today on 18-year-old Jeremy Thomas.
Preliminary Hearing
Auburn police detective Jude Hackett testified that of the more than ten witnesses he interviewed in connection with last month's triple homicide in Auburn, only one identified Desmontae Leonard as the shooter. Leonard fled the scene. Following Wednesday's preliminary hearing, defense attorney Susan James told reporters that she does not believe Leonard's decision to leave following the shooting, has any impact on the case's current state.
Sewell Vote
Seventh District Congresswoman Terri Sewell called it a waste of time. Sewell , the lone Democrat in Alabama's congressional delegation, said she voted against a Republican-backed bill that would have repealed President Obama's health care law.
Combat Challenge
Montgomery is hosting the Second Annual Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge this Friday and Saturday. Firefighters from departments around the southeast will compete in challenges that simulate tasks performed during normal firefighting activities. Mayor Todd Strange says the Montgomery team has excelled since it began participating in the event.
