Winter blast causes sporadic power outages

By Winter weather leaves thousands in dark in Ala

Montgomery, AL – Thousands of people are without power in
Alabama because of the winter weather that hit overnight.
Alabama Power says about 2,500 customers were left without
electricity statewide because of a mix of snow and ice. Many of
those are in southeast Alabama, where falling limbs and trees
snapped utility lines.
Scattered outages are also being reported further north.
The winter precipitation is hampering air travel, too. Workers
are trying to clear runways at the airports in Birmingham and
Huntsville so normal flights can resume.
About 200 people spent the night at Birmingham's airport, many
of them Auburn University football fans trying to get to Arizona
for the national championship game against Oregon.
