Weekend Freeze Warning

A freeze warning has been issued for much of Alabama as cold air begins to push into the state.  The freeze warning issued by the National Weather Service goes into effect Saturday night, it includes some parts of central Alabama, including areas just north of Montgomery.  Forecasters say temperatures are expected to plunge into the early 20s and 30s in some parts of the state, including Mobile area, by early Sunday morning.  Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 60s by Monday.  

Fatal Accident 

Wetumpka authorities have identified the man killed in crash that happened in Wetumpka Friday morning.  Police say 53-year-old Clayton E. Dunavant of Eclectic was killed when his motorcycle was rear-ended by an SUV.  It occurred on U.S. Highway 231 near Jasmine Hill Road.  Traffic was backed up for miles while the wreck was being investigated and cleared.  

Highway Arrests

Police have arrested four people after a highway chase that started in Montgomery and ended in Prattville.  WSFA reports that Montgomery police tried to stop a suspected stolen vehicle.  Instead of stopping, the driver fled.  Alabama state troopers continued the chase when the driver left Montgomery.  The pursuit ended in Prattville, where four people taken into custody.  Their names were not immediately released.  

ASU GEAR UP

The GEAR UP initiative will utilize college campuses and personnel as it prepares middle and high school students for college over the next seven years.  A $49 million dollar grant will facilitate raising awareness and readiness for undergraduate programs.  Alabama State University is hosting workshops and offering the assistance of students from its own College of Education.  ASU President Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd likes the comprehensive nature of the initiative.  A number of other universities in the state are also participating.  More than 10,000 students in the Black Belt, covering 18 school districts and 53 schools will be affected.
