Wave of Violence Over Memorial Day Weekend

Violence marred the Memorial Day weekend in the capital city.  Montgomery Police say five people were slain in shootings and stabbings that occurred between Saturday and Monday.  The latest homicide occurred Monday night on Lower Wetumpka Road where a male victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  No arrests were made.  Detectives are also investigating four unrelated homicides.  A man was stabbed to death Saturday night at an apartment complex on South Court Street.  Fatal shootings on Saturday and Sunday left three people dead on Shenandoah Drive, East Smiley Court and Malabar Road.  Its been about eight months since Montgomery has recorded a wave of shootings and stabbings.

Marsh Proposal

A lot of Alabamians will be monitoring the Alabama Senate today.  Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh said he plans to push his proposed lottery and casi    no gambling bill on the Senate floor.  Marsh has said he is not sure if he has the votes to approve the gambling bill.  He introduced the legislation earlier this month to address a $200 million dollar shortfall in the General Fund budget.  The bare bones budget has already been approved in the Alabama House.  It awaits a final vote in the state Senate.

Weekend Drowning

Authorities in Elmore County say a 23-year-old man drowned over the weekend in Lake Jordan during an outing with a church group.  Sheriff Bill Franklin said Carlton Wade Corbett of Wetumpka drowned after he went into the lake around 4:30 Sunday afternoon.  The sheriff said Corbett was swimming near a rock ledge when he went under.  Dive teams from Montgomery and Chilton counties recovered Corbett's body.

Appealing Termination

A special agent who was fired from the state attorney general's office says he's appealing his termination to the state Personnel Board.  Attorney General Luther Strange accused Howard Sisson of helping former Deputy Attorney General Sonny Regan undermine an investigation into Republican House Speaker Mike Hubbard.  Strange says Sisson helped Reagan secretly tape a conversation with the acting attorney general in charged of the case and later lied about losing the recorder.  Strange accused Sisson of disclosing confidential information.
