Washington ASU's Newest Trustee

Lonnie Washington, a Bessemer attorney, has been appointed trustee of Alabama State University by Gov. Robert Bentley.  His appointment, made Tuesday, needs approval by the state Senate.  Washington will replace Larry D. Thornton Sr.; a Birmingham businessman and former chairman of the ASU board.  Washington, 49, is 1988 ASU graduate.

Alabama State University volunteers are doing their part Tuesday to contribute to the holiday meals of more than 80 families in the Montgomery area.  Faculty and staff members at the Alabama State University spent the past week collecting turkeys, sugar, cranberry sauce and other items as part of the 6th Annual Yuletide Giving campaign.  Many of the recipients told WVAS News that they were grateful for the extra help.

Success Starts

The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce held its annual "Success Starts Here" news conference Tuesday which recognizes new and expanding industries that made significant capital investments during the year.  19 businesses made the list in 2014.  The almost $92 million dollars in capital investments helped secure more than 5,600 existing local jobs and led to the creation of 280 new jobs according to Chamber officials.

Whatley's Statement

An Alabama State Senator and his fiancee issued statements last week that no violence occurred in what police describe as a case of domestic violence.  Auburn Republican Tom Whatley was charged with third-degree domestic violence December 9th for an incident at his house.  Now, a police report is out that says an officer say the senator shove his fiancee to the ground.  In the report, officers state that they were investigating a call about a homeless man in the area.  As they approached Whatley's home police says they saw Whatley grab a woman by the arm and forcefully shove her down.  Whatley's attorney, Don Eddins, says the senator and Lindsay Waits stand behind their statements.
