Today is Veterans Day and parades, tributes and other events are planned across the River Region and across Alabama.  Governor Robert Bentley is scheduled to speak at a Veterans Day event in Tuscaloosa.

In Montgomery at 11 a.m., a parade will be held downtown, followed by a concert of patriotic music at City Hall.  A Veterans Day program will be held at the Cleveland Avenue YMCA on Rosa Parks Avenue, it starts at 11 a.m.

The city of Prattville will join the American Legion Post and Veterans of Foreign Wars post in sponsoring a wreath-laying at the Autauga County Courthouse at 11 a.m.

VA Restructure

The Veterans Affairs Department has announced that the agency is being overhauled to make it easier for veterans to gain access to the department and its many websites.  VA Secretary Robert McDonald called the restructuring the largest in the department's history and said it will bring a singular focus on customer service to an agency that serves 22 million veterans.

Colder Weather

Be prepared to break out the winter clothing later this week.  The National Weather Service says bitterly cold temperatures are expected to surge into the state, dropping high temperatures into the 40s and 50s across much of Alabama.  Forecasters in Huntsville say high temperatures Friday should be 20 to 25 degrees below normal.  Friday's temperatures across the Montgomery area will be in the 40s and in the lower to mid-50s in the Mobile area.  The frigid conditions are part of a larger system that has brought wintry weather to parts of the Rockies and Upper Midwest.

Inmate Captured

Alabama prison officials say one of two inmates who escaped a work facility in Elmore County has been apprehended in west Georgia.  The escapee, 22-year-old Orrin Chappell, was arrested by police in Newnan, Georgia November 5th.  Alabama corrections officials said Chappell and 39-year-old Todd Pike escaped from the Frank Lee Work Center in Deatsville on November 3rd.  Chappell was serving a 10-year sentence on a drug charge.  He is awaiting extradition to Alabama.  Corrections officials say Pike remains at large.  Pike was serving a two-year sentence on a credit card fraud charge out of Chambers County.

World Championship

A team of Montgomery firefighters are celebrating a World Championship.  Members of the Montgomery Fire/Rescue Department set new records in winning the 13th Annual Firefighter Combat Challenge in Phoenix, Arizona.  Montgomery firefighters outperformed their colleagues in various events including the relay, setting a new world record time to claim the 2014 Championship on Sunday.  Montgomery Fire/Rescue also claimed top honors at the Regional Combat Challenge held last month in downtown Montgomery.
