Two Dead in Montgomery Weekend Shootings

Montgomery Police Detectives are investigating separate shootings that left two dead in one incident and five others injured in another case of gun violence.  Authorities say the bodies of two people were found last night in a residence in west Montgomery.  No other information about the homicides has been immediately available.  Also, a shooting late Saturday night sent five people, four women and a man, to the hospital with gunshot wounds.  Montgomery police said the shootings occurred just before midnight Saturday in the 1800 block of Gibbs Court.  Police said the victims' injuries were not life threatening.  There have been no arrests.

Deadly Collision

A Faulkner University cheerleader was among two people killed Saturday night in a head-on crash in Chilton County.  Alabama State Troopers said three vehicles collided on U.S. 82 about five miles east of Maplesville just after 8 p.m. Saturday.  19-year-old Travon Markeze Johnson of Ralph and 18-year-old James Nathan Wheat of Buhl died in the crash.  Johnson was a member of the Faulkner University cheerleading square and the school's soccer team.  Troopers continue to investigate.

Legislative Districts

The fight over Alabama's legislative districts is shifting back to Montgomery.  Last month, a divided U.S. Supreme Court said a lower court must take another look at whether Republican lawmakers relied too heavily on race when they drew new district lines.  Alabama House Speaker Mike Hubbard said he's confident the currently legislative lines will be upheld.  The Legislative Black Caucus last week presented proposed new district maps that they hope could be a starting point for negotiations.

Storm Damage

Powerful and fast moving storms rolled across parts of Alabama Sunday morning overturning several train cars near Abbeville in Henry County.  The storms are blamed for spawning two small tornadoes in Russell County.  Also, storms are blamed for damaging buildings, downing trees, powerlines and flooding roads in Calhoun County.  The National Weather Service said survey teams confirmed that two EF1 tornadoes touched down in Russell County.  Survey teams Monday will visit areas in Henry, Calhoun and Cherokee counties to determine whether a tornado is responsible for the damages.  There were no reports of injuries.
