Trial for State Lawmaker Begins

Decatur, Alabama –

DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - The retrial of state Rep. Sue Schmitz on
fraud charges is set to begin in federal court in Decatur.
Jury selection for Schmitz second trial is scheduled to begin
Tuesday morning before U.S. District Judge David Proctor. Schmitz
first trial last summer ended in a mistrial when jurors could not
reach an unanimous verdict.
Prosecutors have accused the 64-year-old Schmitz of using
political connections to get a job in the state's two-year college
system and then doing little work.
The charges stem from the long-running federal investigation of
the state's two-year college system.
Schmitz is a Democrat from Toney in Madison County.
