Tough Decisions Ahead for 2015 Legislature

Tough decisions are looming for state leaders over the next four years.  That is part of the message from Governor Robert Bentley in his inauguration speech as he ushered in his second term on Monday.  A budget shortfall, overcrowded prisons and improving healthcare are among the challenges mentioned.  The governor did not go into specifics, but he said the state's economy has improved.  Lt. Governor Kay Ivey, Attorney General Luther Strange, Auditor Jim Zeigler, Agriculture Commissioner John McMillian and Secretary of State John Merrill also took their oaths at Monday's ceremonies.

MPD Police Chief

Ernest Finley will be wearing a Montgomery Police uniform today.  Finley is poised to become the Capital City's police chief this morning.  He was named to the post in December following a months-long search.  Finley has said his philosophy toward policing will focus on the community.

Leonard Sentencing

A Lee County judge today will sentence a Montgomery man convicted of killing two former Auburn University football players and a third man.  Jurors convicted Desmonte Leonard of capital murder in connection with the June 2012 shootings.  The three men were slain during a party at an apartment complex near campus.  The jury recommended life without parole for Leonard.

Boyd Honors MLK

Alabama State University President Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd was  among the speakers honoring the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. at his spiritual home in Atlanta.  Boyd told an overflow crowd at Ebenezer Baptist Church that we've come a long way but there's still a lot left to be done to fulfill Dr. King's dream.  King's daughter, the Reverend Bernice King, urged those gathered at the church to act out against injustice.  But she also said they should remember King's message of nonviolence.

Fatal Fire Update

Montgomery Fire Rescue officials have not yet released their findings into what sparked a fatal house fire in west Montgomery that left a toddler and a three-year-old dead.  The fast moving blaze gutted a one-story house on Alexander Street last Friday.  Two of the survivors, two-year-old Tyleah Jackson and the father, Timothy Jackson, were treated for burns.  Authorities say the little girl remains hospitalized at Children's of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.  WSFA reports a Go-Fund Me account has been set up to help the family pay for funeral and other expenses.
