Three Suspects Arrested

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with separate homicides that occurred Sunday.  Two men, 25-year-old Arsenio Hall and 22-year-old Lamarian Hood are charged with murder in the death of 31-year-old Taurio Mushat.  They were among four other people that were shot in the incident.  Their injuries were not life-threatening.  Both are being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility, each under $75,000 bond. 

In the second fatal shooting, 18-year-0ld Quintrell Martin has been charged with murder in the death of 35-year-old Kedrick Jones.  Investigations show the presence of other illegal activity in both homicides and that the individuals all knew each other.  Police ask for anyone with information on these incidents to call CrimeStoppers at 215-STOP, Secret Witness at 262-4000 or the Montgomery Police Department at 625-2831. 

Opelika Shooting

Opelika Police have arrested a 17-year-old male in connection with the fatal shooting of another teenager.  The victim, 17-year-old Alizah Ellis, died of a gunshot wound to the chest Monday afternoon.  Opelika Polic said Vantavious Hughley of Opelika was charged with murder and is being held in the Lee County Detention Facility on a $150,000 bond.  Authorities said both teenagers were students at Opelika High School.  No motive was given.  The homicide was Opelika's first since March 2013. 

2014 Kids Count

For the second straight year, Alabama has been ranked 44th in overall child well-being by the National Kids Count Data Book.  The report uses 16 indicators in four area; economic well-being, education, family and community and health.  Voices for Alabama Children Executive Director, Melanie Bridgeforth says the data shows improvement in health and education. 

Alabama Firefighters

Seven wildland firefighters from the Alabama Forestry Commission are heading to the West Coast to assist in fighting wildfires that have scorched thousands of acres in Oregon and Washington.  State Forestry officials said two were assigned to Washington State where a massive wildfire has burned about 380 square miles.  Another five firefighters were dispatched to Oregon.  The seven Alabama firefighters will be on a 16-day assignment to the U.S. Forest Service.
