Three People Charged in Fatal Shooting in Montgomery

Two Montgomery women and a Montgomery man remain behind bars today, all are charged with capital murder in connection with last Wednesday's fatal shooting of 26-year-old Xavier Moses.  According to Montgomery Police, 19-year-old Stephen Gordon, 20-year-old Quaniesha Carter and 26-year-old Tchernavia McWilliams are each charged with a single count of capital murder.  Police said the three suspects, who are being held without bond, allegedly conspired to rob and shoot the victim on Calmar Drive.

New Commander

Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base gets a new commander today.  Lt. General David Fadok will turn over command to Major General Steve Kwast at an 11 a.m. ceremony.  General Fadok is retiring after 34 years in the Air Force and he said he plans to move his family to Fairhope on the Alabama coast.  Air University provides military education and continuing education to thousands of military and civilian personnel annually.

Siblings Sentencing

Two siblings from Montgomery have been given federal prison sentences for a check fraud scheme that involved more than 100 victims, 200 bank accounts and five states.  Federal prosecutors in Montgomery said 34-year-old Derrick Gadsden will serve a 20 year sentence for wire fraud.  45-year-old David Gadsden was sentenced to 10 years, also for wire fraud.  At a sentencing hearing, a federal judge also ordered the brothers to pay one million dollars in restitution to the victims of their scheme.

IRS Letters

Alabama's top tax official says as many as 20,000 state taxpayers could get unexpected letters from her after filing their tax returns in the spring. But Revenue Commissioner Julie Magee says there is no reason to panic.  She says the Revenue Department is trying to confirm the identities of taxpayers when there are suspicions that the taxpayers' identity has been stolen.  The letter will direct the tax filer to take a quiz on the Internet or call the department to take a quiz.  Magee expects crooks filing fraudulent returns won't try to take the quiz, and that means the refund won't be paid.
