Three MPD Officers Placed On Administrative Leave

Montgomery's police chief says a police officer has been arrested and two other police employees have been placed on administrative leave with pay.  Police Chief Ernest Finely told reporters Wednesday the disciplinary action was taken in connection with a domestic incident that occurred last Sunday at the home of a police officer.  Chief Finley said officer Janice Braswell was arrested and charged with misdemeanor harassment.  Braswell posted bond and was released.  The investigation is being handled by the Office of City Investigations.

Passenger Dies

A Montgomery man faces a murder charged in connection with a fatal crash that resulted in the death of a female passenger.  Montgomery Police allege that Marvin Williams was the driver of a vehicle that crashed early Tuesday morning around 3:20 a.m. on Intestate 65 South near U.S. Highway 80.  The fatal crash killed 36-year-old Tomekico Faye Williams of Montgomery.  Williams was placed in the Montgomery County Detention Facility on a $50,000 bond.

Bice on Budget

Alabama Schools Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice spoke to reporters Wednesday about the fast-approaching school year and the even faster-approaching special session of the Legislature.  Lawmakers will convene next week for a second try at passing a General Fund budget.  A number of legislators have floated ideas that would shift money in the Education Budget to help cover the shortfall in the General Fund.  Dr. Bice wants to dispel the notion that there is a "surplus" in the Education Trust Fund.  Dr. Bice says if the Education Department's Plan 2020, with a goal of reaching a 90 percent graduation rate in Alabama, is allowed to continue forward, many of the state's economic issues would be alleviated.  The Legislature kicks off the special session on August 3rd.
