It was a busy Labor Day weekend for homicide detectives in Montgomery. Three fatal shootings, all occurring between early Saturday and Saturday night, remain under investigation. Sheriff's officials say a suspect is in jail in connection with the robbery-slaying in the Waugh community. 27-year-old Ballard Reynolds was shot about 7 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Marler Road and St. James Church Loop in Waugh. Arrested was 24-year-old Marcus Sanders, he is charged with capital murder and first-degree robbery. Montgomery Police say no arrests have been made in connection with two homicides that occurred within a 30 minute span early Saturday morning. 22-year-old Ronald James was shot to death on Park Towne Way, located off Troy Highway. 38-year-old Darrell Chillous of Millbrook sustained a fatal gunshot wound on Truett Drive in west Montgomery.
Reward Money Increases
The reward money has increased to $2,000 to assist Montgomery Police find the people responsible for vandalizing an apartment where civil rights icon Rosa Parks once lived. Citizens attending an event at Gateway Park Monday afternoon helped to double the reward offer. Last week, thieves vandalized and ransacked the apartment and other units at the Cleveland Court Housing Community. Anyone with information about the break-ins is urged to call CrimeStoppers at 215-STOP.
Andrew Young at ASU
Former United Nations Ambassador and civil rights icon Andrew Young visited the campus of Alabama State University this morning. Young was the keynote speaker at ASU's Bridge Builder's Breakfast at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. Young's visit is part of ASU's week-long series of activities to celebrate the inaugural of school president Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd. Events began Sunday afternoon with a women empowerment luncheon honoring Dr. Boyd. On Thursday, former U.S. Senator Carol Mosely Braun of Illinois will appear at a leadership luncheon. A formal inaugural ceremony for Dr. Boyd is planned for Friday.
Flying Fortress
One of the best-known planes from World War II is scheduled to visit Montgomery next month, giving area residents the chance to fly in the vintage aircraft. The restored B-17 bomber, known as the "Flying Fortress," will be at Dannelly Field and available for tours and flights from October 31st through November 2nd. Stan Tew, president of the Montgomery chapter of the nonprofit Experimental Aircraft Association, said flights will cost $449 dollars. Ground tours of the aircraft will be $10 dollars.
