Thousands Without Power After Winter Storms

Alabama Power Company officials say about 12,000 customers statewide are without electricity this morning after nearly a foot of snow fell in some parts of northern Alabama.  About 8,000 are in the Tuscaloosa area and about 3,500 are in the Birmingham area.  A wide area from north of the Birmingham metro area to the Tennessee state line remains shut down because of dangerous travel conditions on interstates and U.S. routes.  Eleven inches of snow fell in the Guntersvillle area and more than eight inches was measured in the Athens area.  The Weather Service says some areas in Alabama's northeast and northwest corners could break snow fall records dating back to the 1890s.  

Bell for Mayor

A fourth candidate for Montgomery mayor has surfaced.  Ella Bell, Alabama State Board of Education Vice President says she will announce her candidacy today at the State Capitol.  Ella Bell is joining a field of mayoral candidates that includes incumbent Todd Strange, ex-Congressman Artur Davis and Montgomery County Commissioner Dan Harris.  The Montgomery municipal election is August 25th.  

CrimeStoppers Donations

CrimeStoppers of central Alabama needs your donations to continue its campaign to stop, solve and prevent crime.  CrimeStoppers director Tony Garrett says the agency has awarded more than $100,000 reward money to citizens who have provided key information in criminal cases.  Garrett said reward money was approved this week for cases that included robbery, murder, domestic violence and an escaped fugitive.  Central Alabama CrimeStoppers is a non-profit organization and donations can be made at www.215stop.com  

Hiring Workers

An auto supplier is setting up shop in Lowndes County and plans to hire 200 employees.  Fort Deposit Mayor Fletcher Fountain announced Wednesday that Chowel Incorporated will build a manufacturing facility at a site on Highway 185.  Chowel will weld automobile parts for the Hyundai plant in Montgomery and the Kia Motors Factory in West Point, Georgia.  The company said the facility should operating by August.  

Ethics Director

The Alabama Ethics Commission has a new director.  Andalusia attorney Tom Albritton has been named to replace Jim Sumner who retired last October after serving 17 years as ethics director.  The five member ethics panel selected Albritton on Tuesday.  The appointment still must be confirmed by the Alabama Senate.
