Temperatures Plummet Statewide

Much of the nation, including Alabama, remains in the grip of dangerously cold air that has sent temperatures plummeting into the teens and single-digits.  The coldest spot occurred in Haleyville where it was 4 degrees at 5 a.m.  Montgomery, Elmore County and Tuskegee are providing warming stations to help people get out of the bitter cold.  The National Weather Service says the cold snap will last through the weekend.

Human Trafficking

The Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force is planning an event to raise awareness of human trafficking and to educate the public on how to identify potential victims.  Organizers say the task force is asking the mayors of Montgomery, Huntsville, Madison, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and Mobile to sign proclamations tomorrow in observance of National Human Trafficking Awareness Month.  Task force officials say Interstate 20 and Interstate 65 are known as major human trafficking corridors.

Higher Fees

Some business owners in Wetumpka are unhappy about higher fees for business licenses.  The revised fees, which can range from 1,000 to 2,000 percent, were discussed at a meeting Wednesday.  The Wetumpka City Council approved the fee increase in December.  Upset business owners say they will ask the Wetumpka City Council to amend the changes.
