Authorities in Tallassee are now asking for the public's help in the investigation into a major fire that claimed a historic Tallassee landmark last week. The massive blaze ignited late Wednesday night at the Mount Vernon Mill building and required more than 100 firefighters to extinguish. Investigators have described the fire as suspicious since the structure had been vacant for years and there was no electricity there. A joint investigation is being conducted by the State Fire Marshal's office, Tallassee police and fire departments and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Anyone with information on the fire is asked to call the Arson Hotline at 1-800-654-0775.
