Synthetic Marijuana on the Rise in Montgomery

The Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey, police and Fire Department officials are sounding the alarm about synthetic marijuana or what is commonly called spice.  D.A. Daryl Bailey said spice use is on the rise in Montgomery.  He said between last Thursday and Monday, Montgomery Fire Medics responded to 41 cases of young people getting sick after smoking or eating spice.  Authorities said four Montgomery students had to be treated after using spice Monday.  Spice or synthetic marijuana has been banned in Alabama since October 2011 because its has been linked to psychotic episodes and other side-effects.  

Budget Crisis

Two Democratic state senators say the General fund budget crisis can be addressed if legislators are willing to consider proposals like gaming and closing corporate loop holes.  Governor Robert Bentley has proposed a more than $500 million tax hike.  State Senator Bobby Singleton of Greensboro says there's a lot of stake if deep cuts are made in services and state programs.  Fellow Democrat Quinton Ross also said its up to the Republican supermajority to look at all options.  

Victim Identified

Police in Jemison say the 24-year-old woman who was shot at a doctor's office died on the scene Monday morning.  Authorities said the gunman, a former Marine, was her husband.  Jemison police chief Shane Fulmer says Leah Price's husband, 26-year-old Eric Price, followed her and shot her at the office, then returned home where police found and arrested him following a nearly 3 hour standoff at a residence on U.S. 31.  Jemison Police said Eric Price shot himself in the head and is expected to recover.  Police said he will be charged with murder.  

Boycott Celebration Plans

Montgomery officials have begun planning how to celebrate the 60th anniversary of a bus boycott often cited as the start of the civil rights movement.  The Montgomery Advertiser reports that city officials are considering a youth summit but no details have been finalized.  The boycott began days after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery city bus on December 1, 1955.  

Home Invasion

A Montgomery woman is behind bars charged in connection with a home invasion in Pike Road.  Montgomery County Sheriff's officials said investigators arrested 25-year-old Regina Brantley Monday.  Brantley is accused of invading a residence on Meriweather Road late Sunday night where two people were injured, none seriously.  Brantley was charged with multiple counts of burglary, robbery and kidnapping.  Her bond is set at $255,000.
