Stabbings Investigated at State Prisons

State prison officials are investigating two separate stabbing which included one that left an inmate dead, at prisons in Elmore and St. Clair counties.  The Department of Corrections said the violence happened Wednesday night at the Staton Prison in Elmore and St. Clair Prison in Springville.  DOC said 29-year-old Scott Turnland was fatally stabbed inside the Elmore facility by another inmate around 7 p.m. Wednesday.  A 29-year-old inmate, Edward Doe was detained as a suspect.  

In a separate stabbing in the St. Clair prison, 50-year-old prisoner Michael McGregor was stabbed multiple times during a dispute with the another inmate.  McGregor was taken to a medical facility for treatment.  The other inmate involved in the stabbing was detained.  Alabama prison officials said the two prisons are on lockdown Thursday while the stabbings are investigated. 

Lethal Injection

Attorney General Luther Strange is urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a lethal injection drug that Alabama plans to use at is next execution.  The attorney general's office Wednesday filed a brief ahead of April 29 arguments regarding the effectiveness of the sedative midazolam.

New Call Center 

The Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System opened a new customer service call center.  The call facility will be located in Building 4 on the Tuskegee campus. VA officials says the call center will improve access for vets to schedule appointments and or get information about medication, services and resources.  The call center opening comes after the Central Alabama VA was cited for having among the longest wait times in the nation for patients to see medical personnel.
