Siegelman Review Request

More than 100 former state attorneys general have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review the sentence of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, who remains behind bars for a bribery conviction.  The brief filed Wednesday states that a federal judge wrongly gave Siegelman a longer prison sentence by considering accusations for which Siegelman has been acquitted.  

Selma Robotics Competition

Eight teams competed Thursday in the Selma Best Robotics Game Day at Wallace Community College Selma.  The Selma Times-Journal reports one of the those teams, Selma High School participated for a chance to compete in the southwest regionals.  Each team was judged on a marketing presentation, exhibit booths, an engineering notebook, the actual robot competition and team spirit.  

Child Abuse Prevention

The Alabama Department of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention/Children's Trust Fund presented a check worth more than $1,000,000 to be distributed to 11 agencies in the River Region.  The organizations will use the funds evidence-based community programs aimed at preventing child abuse.  

Wildfire Safety

Crews are still battling a wildfire in north Alabama that has consumed more than 660 acres.  The blaze in the Bankhead National Forest has been burning for four days.  Director of Alabama's Forest Protection Division John Goff says its the time of year when many wildfires occur.  Goff says Alabama firefighters are currently tackling wildfires in Covington, Cullman and Hall counties and still six others were brought under control Wednesday.  To date in 2015 there have been almost 1,500 fires in Alabama that have burned over 21,000 acres.
