General Fund

State employees may end up with a one-time pay bonus of $400 in the new fiscal year beginning Oct. 1st.  Senate budget committee Chairman Arthur Orr of Decatur announced he will propose the bonus when the Senate considers the state General Fund budget.  The Senate Finance and Taxation-General Fund Committee approved a General Fund budget Wednesday that would also pay for an ombudsman for female inmates at Tutweiler Prison.  Orr says another $3.5 million dollars will be used to renovate the prison which has come under scrutiny from the Department of Justice.  Republican Senator Cam Ward of Alabaster warned that a shrinking Department of Corrections budget will require some difficult decisions in the near future.  The full Senate is expected to take up the $1.8 billion dollar budget Thursday.
