Shelby Calls for Fuller's Resignation

Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby is calling for the resignation of U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller following the judge's arrest on a domestic violence charge.  Shelby issues a statement saying Fuller has lost the confidence of his colleagues and the people of Alabama.  Fuller was arrested last month after a fight with his wife in Atlanta.  He is avoiding prosecution on a battery charge through a court diversion program.  The Tuscaloosa Republican says Fuller should resign immediately.

Mother Pleads Guilty

An Alabama woman has pleaded guilty in the death of her 4-month-old son, who was left in a hot car.  Calhoun County authorities say 36-year-old Katherine Papke of Anniston pleaded guilty to a charge of criminally negligent homicide.  The Army Private originally was charged with manslaughter and leaving a child unattended in the death of son Bennett Owen Smith.  A statement from prosecutors say the woman was overwhelmed by work and personal obligations when she forgot the boy in the back seat of her vehicle on Aug. 9, 2013.  Papke was accepted into a diversionary program and won't have to spend time in jail.

Prisoner Dies

Authorities say an Alabama inmate convicted of slitting a man's throat in 1998 has died in a prison infirmary.  A spokeswoman with the Alabama Department of Corrections said James Allen Harrison Jr. died Tuesday at Kilby Infirmary in Montgomery.  Authorities did not disclose the cause of his death.  Harrison was convicted and sentenced to death in the Jan. 13, 1998, killing of 41-year-old Thomas Fred Day Jr. of Phenix City.
