Senior Citizens Try to Save Pecan Tree

Munford, Ala – (AP) - A pecan tree next to the Munford City Hall
has been saved from the chain saw by protesting senior citizens who
see the tree as a living reminder of their lives in the small
Alabama town.
The Munford City Council voted Tuesday night to hire a tree
removal service to cut down the tree. City officials say it is
dropping limbs and sap on City Hall and it poses a safety hazard.
Regulars at the senior citizen center directly opposite the tree
decided that was overkill.
They gathered around the tree on Wednesday, carrying signs
saying, "Save Our Tree."
Protester Edna Gallahar called the tree a landmark that had been
there since the senior citizens were children.
Their protest worked. City officials say they will rethink their
decision.
