Selma to Montgomery Marchers Wrap Up Day One

Some 75 people are making the historic trek from Selma to Montgomery this week.  The group plans to walk about ten miles each day to reach the State Capitol this Friday where a rally is planned.  Erica Fox, WJAB's News and Public Affairs Director is on the trail and tells WVAS, the marchers come from all walks of life.  This past weekend, about 80,000 people attended festivities and events in Selma for the 50th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March.  

Gunshot Victim Crashes

Montgomery police say a man suffered a life threatening gun shot wound early Monday morning just after 1 a.m. in the 4300 block of Mobile Road.  Police said the adult male, whose name was withheld, crashed his vehicle into a gas pump.  The man's condition has not been available.  No arrests have been made.  

Deadly Motorcycle Accident

Authorities says motorcyclist has been killed when his bike and a vehicle collided in Opelika.  Opelika police says the crash happened around 7:15 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Marvyn Parkway and Gateway Drive.  Authorities identified the victim as 43-year-old Christopher Collins of Opelika.  Officials said the driver of the other vehicle, an SUV, was not hurt.  Opelika police are investigating the collision.  

HBCU Donation

Alabama State University is one of four universities to receive a donation from Toyota for their role in the fight for voting rights.  The $50,000 check, which will be divided equally among the schools, was presented Monday to Alabama State, Tuskegee, Alabama A&M and Selma University.  Adrienne Trimble, General Manager for Toyota's Diversity and Inclusion division, says it was a pleasure to visit ASU.  Trimble says the check amount is in honor of the 50 year anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March.
