Prison Report Released

The Equal Justice Initiative is releasing more findings of abuse, corruption and misconduct in a new report on Alabama prisons.  The report cites nearly a dozen instances of inmates being stripped and beaten by officers at Elmore Correctional Facility.  EJI Executive Director Bryan Stevenson says the Alabama Department of Corrections hasn't done enough to reform the system.  The Alabama Department of Corrections has not yet responded to this latest report.

ASU Awards

A ceremony recognizing veterans and police officers was held Tuesday at Alabama State University.  Nine individuals were acknowledged at the Inaugural Veterans Day Ceremony Honoring the Service and Sacrifice of the ASU Police Department.  ASU officials recognized Corporal Phillip Lee with posthumous awards for his dedication to ASU.  Lee was killed in a traffic accident in December of 2000, while responding to a call.  His family received the Police Star Award and the Chief's Commendation in his honor.

Siegelman Update

A federal judge has scheduled a hearing for former Gov. Don Siegelman's latest request to get out of prison.  Defense lawyers are asking the judge to free Siegelman while he appeals his 2006 bribery conviction.  Lawyers say the release is merited since his appeal has gone on much longer than anticipated.  The hearing is scheduled for Dec. 15th.  The former governor is incarcerated at a Louisiana prison camp and is projected to be released in 2017.
