President Obama Highlights Proposed Lending Regulations

President Obama used a visit to Alabama's largest city to promote policies that he said would protect working families, including new proposed regulations for payday lenders.  In a speech Thursday at Lawson State Community College in Birmingham, Mr. Obama said a lender should first make sure that a borrower can afford to pay the money back.  The president also said proposed federal rules would protect consumers from being stuck in a cycle of debt.  

Stabbing Death

A Montgomery woman has died from injuries she sustained when she was stabbed earlier this month.  Her alleged attacker 41-year-old Jesse Davidson, also of Montgomery is behind bars charged with murder.  Montgomery police said Davidson was apprehended Thursday on Mill Street by U.S. Marshals.  Davidson is charged in the death of 31-year-old Dannie Carter of Montgomery.  Police said the victim was stabbed March 13th in the 1400 block of Sierra Street.  MPD said an initial investigation indicated the stabbing stemmed from a domestic dispute.  Davidson is being held in the Montgomery County Jail under a $250,000 bond.  

Crutcher Resigns

A long time Alabama State University trustee is resigning from the board.  Buford Crutcher of Huntsville said in a statement that a prolonged investigation of ASU has turned up no evidence of wrongdoing and said the 28 month long probe has crippled the school's growth.  The 68-year-old Crutcher had served on the ASU Trustee Board since 1998.  

Selma Superintendent

Selma City Schools have a new school superintendent.  She is Dr. Angela Mangum, a former education administrator, at the State Department of Education.  Mangum beat out four other finalists for the position.  Selma City Schools have undergone a major shake-up in recent months that included the take over by a state intervention team.
