Predatory Lending

A rally against predatory lending was held Tuesday in Montgomery by the Alabama Alliance for responsible lending.  The group is made up of more than 22 agencies in Alabama pushing for legislation that would cap interest rates on payday and title loans at 36 percent versus the current rate of up to 400 percent. 

Read and Rise

Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd, Alabama State University's new president, was among several faculty, staff and student volunteers who read to area school children Tuesday.  The Read and Rise Day of Service is an annual part of the university's Founders' Day celebration.  Boyd said giving back is a part of the culture of the institution.  University volunteers also read to student in Marion, Alabama. 

Black History

Faculty, staff and students gathered Tuesday for the Black History Month Opening Convocation at Alabama State University.  The keynote speaker, Cheryl Brown Henderson, was a plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education.  Brown said the fight for equal educational opportunities continues today.
