Possible Closures include State Parks and Driver's License Offices

Alabama's governor says he is finalizing a list that includes the closings of driver's license offices, National Guard Armories and state parks.  Robert Bentley made the comments in Birmingham Monday.  Bentley said the heads of several state agencies, including the law enforcement agency, Conservation Department and the Alabama National Guard were ordered to draw up a list of possible closures.  The state's General Fund budget that was recently approved in a special session contains budget cuts of 5.5 percent for some state agencies.  Governor Bentley's spokeswoman Jennifer Ardis said agency heads will meet with the governor today to discuss the cutbacks.  The new fiscal year begins on Thursday.

Montgomery Gathering

More than 650 members of Alabama's law enforcement community are gathering in Montgomery for an annual meeting.  The Attorney General's Law Enforcement Summit will be held today at Frazer United Methodist Church on Atlanta Highway.  AG Luther Strange says the main topic of the gathering is combatting drug abuse through education, communication and collaboration between police agencies.  The meeting also will include a commemoration of officers who have died in the line of duty.

Double Shooting

Montgomery County District Attorney Darryl Bailey says a Montgomery man convicted in a double shooting that left one man dead and another injured will serve life in prison without parole.  At a hearing Friday, Circuit Judge Eugene Reese sentenced 22-year-old Walter Miles for the December 2013 shooting death of Ricky Farris and the attempted murder of Joshua Hopper.  Prosecutors said both victims were shot in the 3200 block of Otis Lane in the Smiley Court Housing Community.  A co-defendant, Walter Mile's brother, Antonio Middleton, was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year.
