Population of Montgomery in Decline

Montgomery has maintained its berth as the second largest city in the state, but according to the latest census report the city’s numbers have been in decline. As of 2016, Montgomery had a population of 200,022 residents. That’s a drop of more than 800 from the previous year. Huntsville has overtaken Mobile to become Alabama's third-largest city. The north Alabama city is home to 193,079 people. That surpasses Mobile's estimated population of 192,904. Huntsville is the only one of the state's four largest cities that is growing. Birmingham is still number one, but is down slightly to an estimated population of just over 212,000 people. Some rapidly growing populations include Tuscaloosa, Fairhope, Daphne, Auburn and Madison.
