Poll finds most residents ready to move from Gulf Coast

By South Ala poll shows oil spill's disruptive impact

Mobile, AL – A new poll of residents in southern Mobile
County has found that the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has
left about one-third with a desire to leave.
The survey, conducted by the University of South Alabama's
polling group, also found that 71 percent of those responding
believe the oil spill caused permanent ecological damage to the
Gulf. And 38 percent disagreed with the statement that seafood from
spill-affected areas is safe to eat.
The Press-Register in Mobile reported the poll results Thursday.
The telephone survey of 412 people living south of Interstate 10,
excluding Theodore, was conducted Sept. 9-27. It has a margin of
sampling error of plus or minus five percentage points.
When asked if they would move to another community if they
could, 32 percent said they would.
