Overnight Shooting in Montgomery

Montgomery police are investigating a shooting overnight.  Officers say the unnamed individual was shot around 8 p.m. in the 100 block of East Park Avenue.  The victim's injury was not life threatening and no arrests were made.  Meanwhile, the investigation continues into Monday night's fatal shooting of 21-year-old Brandon Harris.  The victim was found dead of a gunshot wound at the Liberty Square Apartments off Troy Highway.  Montgomery has recorded 29th homicides this year.

Alabama Power Scam

Con artists are once again targeting customers of Alabama Power Company.  The utility is telling consumers that if you get an automated call asking for instant payments and a warning that your power is about to cut off, hang up.  Alabama power officials say they do not call customers demanding instant payment.  The scammers are using a caller ID that indicates the call is coming from Alabama Power, but remember criminals can fake that.  Alabama Power is asking customers who receive the fake calls to call them to 800-245-2244.

Closing Arguments

Lawyers are expected to give closing arguments today in the perjury trial of an Enterprise lawmaker.  Prosecutors say GOP Representative Barry Moore lied to a grand jury when he denied telling his primary opponent that House Speaker Mike Hubbard threatened to hold up economic development funds if he jumped in the race.  Prosecutors on Tuesday played recorded telephone conversations between Moore and opponent Josh Pipkin.  Defense lawyer Bill Baxley says Moore wants to take the stand in his own defense.  The trial in Opelika is the first courtroom test of a corruption probe that has targeted Hubbard who was indicted on 23 felony ethics charges.

Armed Robbery

Prosecutors in Cobb County, Georgia say a Montgomery man will serve life in prison without parole for an armed robbery conviction.  46-year-old James Arrington of Montgomery was sentenced on charges of robbery, aggravated assault, kidnapping and other offense in connection with a violent robbery in November 2012.  A Georgia prosecutor said Arrington and another male robbed an Atlanta Cash Solutions van carrying more than $100,000 in cash.  Arrington, according to authorities, has an extensive criminal record that includes two armed robberies in Montgomery.
