Online Driver License Renewal

Alabamians can now go online to renew their driver licenses.  The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Thursday unveiled the new procedure along with another initiative that will enable people to make appointments for visits to driver license examining offices across the state.  Anyone renewing their license online must have a printer to print out a temporary license.  A permanent license would be mailed out within 30 days.  Anyone renewing online will be required to pay a service fee.  Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier says the initiatives should reduce wait times as well as save the department money.

Global Solutions Expansion

An existing company in Montgomery has announced plans to create 300 new jobs.  Expert Global Solutions of EGS is also making a one million dollar capital investment by expanding its building on Executive Park Drive.  The company's Montgomery Site Director Pat Deprospo says hiring has already begun.  Application information is available at the company's website, which is egscorp.come/careers.  EGS is a customer service organization that has been in Montgomery since 2001.

Cellphone Scam

Two Alabama inmates have pleaded guilty to running a cellphone scam while they were in prison.  Federal prosecutors in Montgomery say 26-year-old Michael Shane Garrison and 21-year-old Marlon Ramon Coston each pleaded guilty to wife fraud charges this week.  Authorities say the men used phones that were smuggled into the Bullock County prison to call convenience stores.  The men would obtain account numbers of prepaid debit cards from workers and give them to 48-year-old Pamela Lee of Madison.  Lee would then transfer cash balances from one card to another.  Prosecutors say she also pleaded guilty in the scam.  Each person could received a sentence of 20 years in federal prison.

Traffic Stop Shooting

Hoover Police say a man accused of shooting at officers during a traffic stop told investigators he was upset with his life and acting stupid.  Al.com reports that 41-year-old Martin Harlow Wood is charged with three counts of attempted murder and is being held without bond.  Hoover Police Capt. Gregg Rector says officers were conducting a traffic stop early Thursday morning and were standing with a woman near their patrol cruisers when at least five shots were fired from a passing SUV.  Rector says officers who were in the area caught up to the SUV, took Wood into custody and found a gun in his car.  No injuries were reported.
