One Day Left in Special Session

Only one day remains in a special session and Governor Robert Bentley says he will not back down with members of his own political party over tax increases.  The Alabama Senate will vote today on a budget that cuts $200 million from state agencies.  The governor said the spending plan is unworkable and unacceptable.  Senate Budget chairman Arthur Orr of Decatur said he and his colleagues realize the General Fund is not perfect.  Bentley has said he expects to call lawmakers back to Montgomery for another special session but would not say when.

Prattville police say a 19-year-old female is facing a murder charged in connection with the stabbing death of a man in Prattville.  Police Chief Mark Thompson said a "domestic altercation" led to the Friday evening stabbing of a 19-year-old male.  Thompson said the victim was found lying on Strength Street when officer arrived.  The deceased victim's name is being withheld due to the investigation.  19-year-old Vegas Contorno is charged with murder.  She is being held on a $250,000 bond at the Autauga Metro Jail.

Weekend Sales

Retailers across Alabama report a bump in sales with this weekend's sales tax holiday for back to school supplies.  The tenth annual sales tax holiday concluded on Sunday.  Shoppers avoided paying sales tax on clothing worth less than $100, for example, school uniforms.  Also, no taxes were paid on computers worth less than $750.  Other school supplies like printers and ink and paper were also tax free.
