Officials Investigate Tallassee Fire

Fire investigators say the blaze that destroyed a mill in Tallassee overnight is suspicious in nature.  The vacant Mount Vernon Mill was consumed by flames starting around 11 o'clock last night.  It took nearly 100 firefighters to bring the fire under control.  Fortunately there have been no reports of injuries, although several people were evacuated from nearby homes as a precaution.  A cause has not been determined but officials on the scene say the fire is suspicious because the building was vacant and has been targeted by vandals in the past.  The mill dates back to the 1840s in Tallassee.  It closed in 2005 and was actually in the process of being torn down.
