Non Profits Oppose Tax-Exemption Bill

Lawmakers passed a bill on the last day of the recent special session that adds new regulations to non-profit organizations in the state.  The bill's sponsors say the charitable groups should have to file a report of all their tax exempt transactions and obtain a tax exemption certificate on an annual basis.  Leaders of some of the state's largest non-profits are criticizing the legislation.  Jimmy Hill, President and CEO of the River Region United Way.  He recently sent a letter to his organization's supporters requesting that they make their displeasure over the legislation known to Governor Robert Bentley.  The governor has not said if he will sign the bill or not.

Delay Request

A judge has tentatively pushed backed indicted House Speaker Mike Hubbard's ethics trial until a date in March that overlaps with the 2016 legislative session.  Circuit Judge Jacob Walker Monday granted a defense request to delay an October trial.  However, defense lawyers objected to the new date, saying they could not be ready until early summer.  Hubbard faces 23 felony ethics counts accusing him of using his public offices to enrich his businesses.

Pedestrian Killed

State Troopers say a Tuskegee woman was struck and killed by a car.  Troopers say it happened early Monday about 3:15 a.m. and claimed the life of 61-year-old Gail Mary Ransom.  Troopers said Ransom was hit by the car on U.S. 29 about four miles south of Tuskegee.  The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.  No charges were filed.
