No Benefit Increase for Social Security

The federal government says there will be no benefit increase next year for millions of Social Security recipients disabled veterans and federal retirees.  It's just the third time in 40 years that benefits will remain flat.  The main reason for no increase next year is low gas prices.  By law, the annual cost of living adjustment or COLA is based on a government measure of inflation.

Deadly Standoff

A deadly standoff in Conecuh County has left a suspect dead.  Alabama State Troopers shot and killed the man after they say he fired upon authorities from a house off Highway 31 between Evergreen and Castleberry.  A trooper spokesman says state officers were called last night to assist Conecuh County deputies after a reported assault in Monroeville earlier in the evening.  Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier, Trooper Colonel John Richardson and SBI Director Gene Wiggins also responded to the scene.  No officers were injured.

State Parks Closing

Five state parks are scheduled to close today.  But some communities are working to take over parks in south and west Alabama.  The Montgomery Advertiser reports Florala State Park near the Alabama-Florida line will be turned over to the city of Florala on Friday.  The newspaper said local and county governments are poised to take control of two other state parks, Paul M. Grist near Selma and Roland Cooper in Wilcox County.  Other parks closing today include Bladon Springs in Choctaw County and Chickasaw State Park in Marengo County.

Vote Challenge

A city council candidate who lost a runoff race for the District 4 seat has filed a challenge.  West Montgomery businessman William Boyd is contesting his loss to incumbent David Burkette.  A lawyer representing Boyd filed the election contest in Montgomery Circuit Court this week.  Boyd contends Burkette did not file required campaign contribution documents before the municipal election and should be disqualified.  David Burkette admits he was late filing the reports but said he won re-election fair and square.

JD Principal

The principal of Jefferson Davis High School has been named to the USA Football Board of Directors.  Bobby Abrams is one of eight new members of the governing board which oversees the development of youth, high school and other amateur sports.  Abrams is a former NFL linebacker who was part of the New York Giants team that won Superbowl 25.
