Newborn Found in Trashcan

Authorities in Perry County say criminal charges are pending against a 20-year-old woman after her newborn baby was put in a trash can.  The Tuscaloosa News reports that the infant was found last Thursday in the rear of a residence in Newborn, Alabama.  The baby is being treated for an infection at Children's of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.  Perry County Sheriff's investigators and District Attorney Michael Jackson said the woman, whose name was withheld, will be charged with attempted murder, when she is released from a hospital in Demopolis.  The district attorney said if the infant does not survive, the woman will be charged with capital murder.

Second-Hand Smoke

The potential health hazards of second hand smoke was discussed at length during a public hearing Monday at Montgomery City Hall.  Dozens of citizens packed the old city council chambers to express their opinions about a proposed city ordinance that would ban smoking in most public buildings.  Others were also concerned about electronic or e-cigarettes.  The anti-smoking ordinance is sponsored by City Councilman C.C. Calhoun.  He said he does not expect the full city council to vote on the proposed smoking ban until early next year.

Legislature Orientation

New members of the Alabama Legislature will gather in Montgomery today for orientation.  The newly elected lawmakers will hear presentations about the legislative process, state budgets and the role of a legislator.  Members will also take a mandatory training course on the requirements of the state ethics law.  Orientation begins today and lasts through Thursday.  Governor Robert Bentley and Chief Justice Roy Moore will address legislators on Thursday.  The 2015 regular legislative session begins in March.

Selma Movie

The American Film Institute has named the civil rights drama "Selma" among its top 10 movies of the year.  Parts of the movie were filmed in Selma and Montgomery this summer.  The group also chose the jazz school drama "Whiplash" and the sci-fi epic "Interstellar."  AFI announced its annual picks Monday.  The AFI Awards will be handed out on January 11th in Los Angeles.
