New state schools superintendent to be chosen today

Apr 20, 2018

A new State Schools Superintendent is expected to be chosen today by the Alabama Board of Education.  The panel narrowed the list to four finalists last week. Those four individuals are to be interviewed during the day, after which the board will confer and choose the state’s next schools chief. The finalists are Jefferson County Superintendent Craig Pouncey, Hoover City Schools Superintendent Kathy Murphy, Superintendent Association of Alabama Executive Director Eric Mackey and former Texas Education Commissioner Robert Scott.

A schedule released by the school board indicates that all interviews are to be concluded by 3:30 this afternoon and a new superintendent is to be named by 4:45. The board is seeking a replacement for former Superintendent Michael Sentance who resigned in Septembe

r after one year, following a poor performance evaluation.
