MPD Officer Resigns

The Montgomery Police Department has begun termination proceedings after a domestic violence charge was filed against one of its officers.  21-year-old Gary Cooper has been with the force since last year.  A statement from police says Cooper was arrested Tuesday night on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.  He has since resigned.

New K-9

The latest addition to Montgomery's K-9 division has now completed her training and will be used for drug search and seizure operations.  The 11-month old Belgian Malinois was donated to the department by Charter Communications.  Bureau Commander for the K-9 Matt Higgins says that represents about an $8,000 contribution.  The aptly named Charter went through approximately 10 weeks of training at the Alabama K-9 Law Enforcement Training Center before returning to Montgomery for an additional four weeks of training with her assigned handler.  The  police department now has 13 K-9 officers.

New Task Force

Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey along with community leaders announced the formation of the Montgomery County Elder Justice Task Force Wednesday.  The group will address abuse and financial exploitation of those 60 and over.  Bailey said they will immediately begin investigating and prosecuting elder abuse without putting the burden on the seniors.  Task force members will include representatives from law enforcement, adult protective services, clergy, financial institutions and businesses.

Ford Press Conference

A press conference was held in downtown Montgomery by members of Save Ourselves for Democracy and Justice, Macon and Greene County residents and Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford Wednesday.  The group contends their voting rights were violated when Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange closed several gaming facilities in their area.  The group vows to continue fighting for Medicaid expansion and voting rights in Alabama.
