MPD Makes Arrest in Recent Deadly Shooting

Montgomery police have made an arrest in the early Wednesday morning death of 44-year-old Robert Nelson.  Montgomery Police say 41-year-old John Cain of Montgomery was arrested and charged with one count of murder.  He is being held in the Montgomery County Detention Facility on $75,000 bond.  Police say Nelson was fatally shot during an argument that took place in the 900 block of West South Boulevard.  Montgomery Police responded to the report of a shooting at around 4:30 a.m.  Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene.  His body was found in the parking lot near Waffle House.  Cain was quickly identified as a suspect.  

Accountability Act

Supporters and opponents of the Alabama Accountability Act showed up in force at a public hearing Wednesday on a bill that would make changes to the original legislation.  When the Act originally passed sponsors said it was intended to help students in failing public schools be able to attend non-failing public schools or private schools.  The bill's sponsor, Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh wants to increase the collective yearly cap on donations to the scholarship program from $25 million to $35 million and make some other revisions.  A vote on the bill was postponed at Marsh's request.  

Toddler Dies

Bessemer police say a child has died after drinking from a bottle of soda believed to be laced with methadone.  Sgt. Charlie Burton tells Al.com 31-year-old Cassie Townsend was babysitting the 2-year-old boy Friday and noticed that a bottle containing methadone was not where she left it.  Methadone is a medication used to treat addiction to heroin and other opioid drugs.  Police say Townsend found the boy and took him to a local hospital because he appeared to be sick.  Burton says the boy was unresponsive and later died.  Townsend was initially charged with chemical endangerment of a child.  Its unclear if she has an attorney.
